Daily 5
Daily 5 is a program used to allow students to make choices on what reading and writing activities they will complete during the day. A mini lesson will be taught and then the students will be given a certain amount of time to work on one of the Daily 5 components. Below are the following components that will be modified to fit a 5th grade classroom.
Read to Yourself - The best way to become a better reader is to practice each day with books that you have picked in your just-right reading level. Our goal is to reach a stamina of 30 minutes every day!
Read to Someone - Reading to someone allows for more time to practice strategies help you work on fluency, expression, checking for understanding, hear your own voice, and share in the learning community.
Work on Writing - Just like reading, the bet way to become a better writer is to write every day. Each student will practice going through the writing process on a variety of different writings through out the year. They will also be working on their grammar skills at this time.
Word Work / Spelling - Correct spelling allows for more fluent readers and writers. This will give students time to work on the weeks spelling words.
Technology - A variety of stories to listen to and apps will be available for students to work on independent skills. Technology allows each student to be doing the same activity at their own level.

CRAFT
The CRAFT system is an extension of the CAFE system which your students may have already used. CRAFT allows us to use previous skills used in CAFE, but to dive deeper into higher level thinking skills and how to respond to the text we are reading. The acronym stands for Comprehension, Readers Response, Attributes, Foundations, Text Features and Elements.
40 Book Challenge
This year 5th grade students are being challenged to read 40 books!!! This may sound like a lot but if your child reads one book a week they will accomplish this goal. Every day your child will have 20 minutes of read to self time to work on this goal and they will have 20 minutes of reading homework. With all this reading time this challenge should be easily accomplished.
